The Problem

The bill arrives long after the fire

Ohio shows what this costs a public employer. Between 2001 and 2020, 149 cancer workers’ compensation claims from Ohio firefighters totalled $44.6 million, about $300,000 each, and cancer was the state’s highest-cost diagnosis category (CDC/NIOSH, 2025). That’s one state, and every dollar was spent after someone was already sick.

Proactive vs. Retroactive

Start the record at the fire, not at the claim

Almost everything a city spends on firefighter cancer is spent backward: claims, disputes, early retirements, backfill. By the time it shows up in a budget line, the calls that mattered are a decade gone and nobody wrote down what the crew was exposed to. Measuring exposure during the incident puts that information where a department can still use it.

What your city gets on day one

A rugged multi-gas detector mounts on a standard self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and reports a running volatile organic compound (VOC) total in ppm·minutes, along with CO, H₂S, LEL, and O₂ for acute safety. Command sees it while the call is still running, and the same readings land on the chief dashboard.

Many jurisdictions already presume that certain firefighter cancers are occupational. That presumption still leaves someone reconstructing a twenty-year career out of paper run sheets. A per-member record written at the time serves everybody better: the firefighter, the department, and the city carrying the claim.
