RespAI measures each firefighter’s total volatile organic compound (VOC) exposure continuously in the field and reports it as cumulative dose in ppm·minutes. Those numbers stream off the fireground to the department dashboard while the call is still running.

Dose is concentration times time. We measure both.
A spot reading tells you what’s in the air right now. It says nothing about what a firefighter has taken on over a 40-minute interior attack. RespAI adds it up as the call runs, so each firefighter ends the call with one total VOC dose in ppm·minutes.

What Gets Measured
One dose metric, four acute-safety channels
The multi-gas detector tracks total VOC as one cumulative dose from entry to exit. CO, H₂S, LEL, and O₂ are monitored separately for acute safety. An e-nose sensor that identifies individual carcinogens is in development.
Total VOC
Volatile organic compounds are among the combustion products on the fireground. RespAI adds them up into one running dose, so a firefighter's total is a measured number, not a guess.
Carbon monoxide (CO)
An immediate hazard on scene, and a good read on how bad the atmosphere has gotten at any point in the call.
Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S)
A toxic gas given off by smoldering and decomposing material. The reading is live, so crews and command see it move as the atmosphere changes.
Explosive atmosphere (LEL)
The lower explosive limit tells crews when an atmosphere is heading toward flammable concentrations. That is a warning to act on now, not a number to add up later.
Oxygen level (O₂)
Depleted or enriched oxygen is a life-safety problem in either direction. O₂ is sampled continuously, the same as every other channel on the detector.

Every incident leaves a timeline.
Each response produces a minute-by-minute exposure timeline for every firefighter on scene: when dose started accumulating, how fast it climbed, when a threshold was crossed, and what the incident total was at exit.
The same readings always produce the same status. A chief who opens the timeline six months later gets the same answer the incident commander saw on scene.

Why It Matters
Measured numbers change what a department can do
IARC classified occupational exposure as a firefighter as Group 1 in 2022, carcinogenic to humans. Most departments still track that exposure in a logbook, with nothing broken out per firefighter. A measured dose gives a chief something specific to work from.
Act during the incident
Dose is measured while the incident runs, so a commander can rotate a crew off the line during the call.
