RespAI measures fireground exposure while the crew is still on the call. Total volatile organic compound (VOC) exposure adds up as a dose in ppm·minutes, and command can watch that number climb. Every reading lands in a record that follows the firefighter for a career.

Our Story

This problem found us first.

Bryce spent ten years on the frontline. He watched crews walk out of structure fires with no record of what they had just worked in. Incomplete combustion fills a room with carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds. None of it leaves a mark you can see once the smoke clears, and what it does tends to surface years later, long after the shift it came from. In 2022 the World Health Organization’s cancer agency classified occupational exposure as a firefighter as Group 1: carcinogenic to humans. Exposure, meanwhile, was tracked on paper and in people’s heads. Ask a department what one member had been exposed to over a year and there was no answer. Command had nothing to work from during the call, and a firefighter filing a claim a decade later had nothing on file. So we built the record. RespAI pairs a multi-gas sensor mounted on the self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with software that totals VOC exposure while the incident is still running. It also reads carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, combustible gas, and oxygen for the acute hazards that need a call from command right then. Every reading is filed against the individual firefighter and stays auditable. Today it measures total VOC. An e-nose in development is meant to identify the carcinogens themselves. RespAI Inc. is a Canadian company, built in Newfoundland and Labrador, where our first pilot runs today.

The rules we build by

Data you can defend

Crews are betting on these numbers, so we don’t let them drift. Alerts fire on fixed thresholds, and stored readings can’t be edited after the fact. The same incident gives the same answer fifteen years from now.

Measured, not remembered

Total VOC exposure comes back as a cumulative dose in ppm·minutes, per firefighter, per incident. That holds up better than a shift reconstructed from memory a week later.

Visible early enough to act

An exposure nobody can see gets treated like an exposure that isn’t there. We put a number on it early enough for a chief to act on that call, and we keep it on file long after.
